What is wrong with people?

January 27th, 2009 | By audra-kgmi in Uncategorized | No Comments »

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles police say a man distraught over his job situation killed his wife and five children before committing suicide at their home. The victims include two sets of twins.

Many people view news reporters as jaded, callous individuals who are impervious to the suffering of others.  Well, let me set the record straight– not this reporter.

Even after 12 years in the business, I am still shocked, outraged and even moved to tears after reading stories like the one posted above.  I’ve covered countless tragedies over the years, both in television and in radio, and the job never gets easier.  It’s especially difficult when you are the “on-scene” reporter and witnessing first-hand the aftermath of a violent crime or interviewing survivors or family members about the loved ones they’ve lost.  Inundated with disturbing and graphic details (that sometimes aren’t fit for the airwaves), there are many times I’ve needed a break after covering an on-going news story. And the one question I always seem to ask myself is– what is wrong with people?

I realize every situation is different and the circumstances that lead up to a crime vary but I will never understand how people can commit such acts, especially to children.

The Longest Storm

Wow!  What a week!  Really, it’s been more than a month since we have had a break from Mother Nature.  I am thrilled that this week’s forecast calls mostly for cloudy conditions and fog.  There’s even a chance for some sun late in the week.  We can all use a little sunshine and dry conditions right about now.

A major weather event is the number one reason people tune in to the news.  It was a long week for the KGMI newsteam but an important one.  River levels, road conditions, and school closures, among other things, were changing by the minute.

I hope our information and reports helped you in some way.  Our listeners certainly helped us with phones calls, emails and updates.  As you begin to dry out and reflect on the snow, wind, ice and rain storms, please let me know if you think there’s an area where we can improve our coverage.  I’d love to hear your suggestions.  And if your home or business was affected by the storms, best of luck as you recover.
