Why is this news?
08 July 2009 | By audra-kgmi in UncategorizedI expect us to examine and fawn over the First Lady’s choice of clothes on inauguration day but I was blown away by two recent headlines on the Huffington Post website. “Michelle Obama, Family Changes Clothes Mid-Flight” and “Obama’s Fourth of July Fashion”. The first article even included detailed photos of shoes, belts, sweaters, etc.! Since when do we care?
Does our obsession with celebrities and material objects now include the office of the President of the United States? What do you think? It seems trivial and quite silly to me.

Good blog.
I think you’re right: it’s trivial and totally lame. Yet the Obamas are viewed by many as superstars, and the first lady as a fashion-forward icon….which means people want to see these examples. If people didn’t like trivial subjects (including photos), People and US Weekly (or TMZ or Ryan Seacrest, or E!, etc, etc…) wouldn’t be as insanely popular.

You are right, there is a demand for fashion news and fashion photos of the Obamas… no doubt. I enjoy picking up a glossy every now and then. But I say leave that to People and US Weekly and E!. I just don’t want to see it on the Huffington Post, CNN and Fox News.

It’s amazing what they’ll pick up, or pick at, when it comes to the picking what stories to air about the clothes the Obamas pick.
Just about everything about them’s making the news, bad or irrelevant.
